Sensational Sunflowers

It’s no secret. I love sunflowers. It was one of my first flowers I planted & grew for our wedding flower business. We often get asked “What flower can I start in my garden as a first timer & beginner gardener?” We suggest the sunflower every single time. There’s a few reasons why it’s my fave flower and should be yours too.

  • Weeds. They’re everywhere. And never ending. The one great thing about sunflowers is that they are rather low maintenance in the weeding department as they are rather large and can choke the weeds out.

  • Sunflowers are the perfect flower to plant alongside of your fruit or vegetable garden as they are super attractive to bees, which you absolutely need to pollinate your fruit & veggie flowers. Bees are our friends. :)

  • There are a lot of varieties of sunflowers and some are really really super adorable. Such as the Teddy Bear Sunflower. OMG have you seen one before? They look so snuggly!

  • Like aforementioned, they are a super low maintenance flower. They prefer sun (hence SUNflower) but they like partial sun/shade too. They will always turn their face towards the sun so even if you plant them in an awkward location, they’ll find their way to get some of that glow.

  • You can harvest & dry sunflower seeds. Shucking sunflower shells gives you the yummy little seed inside which is delicious on a salad. You can also keep these dried seeds and replant for next year!

  • Sunflowers have gained a lot of popularity over the last decade in wedding floral arrangements. Mainly as more and more fall weddings are happening vs. spring. But, even if you are having a spring wedding doesn’t mean you can’t have sunflowers!
